X-rated videos
X-rated videos are films with content considered only appropriate for adults. They may only be shown at certain theaters or video stores and cannot be viewed by children.
In the 1960s, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) implemented its system of movie ratings. Starting with G for General audiences and progressing all the way up to X for movies that contain content suitable only for adults; many award-winning films from Midnight Cowboy to The Last Tango in Paris received this distinction.
The MPAA’s X rating was once its strictest classification of film ratings; comparable to today’s NC-17 classification (meaning no one under 18 can view). It was eventually replaced in 1990 by the trademarked NC-17 rating; however some X-rated movies continue to play cinemas today.
In the 1970s, the porn industry started co-opting the X rating as a means to denote adult content in its movies and TV shows. They would frequently add another „X”, signifying more explicit or violent material.
As time passed, the X rating began to morph into more Xs and XXs as distributors made increasingly explicit films available to audiences. A first X would signify relatively tame sex films; second-tier ratings meant extreme violence or soft core nudity content; finally a third-tier designation denoted hardcore pornographic movies.
These designations may seem informal, but they’re commonly employed by pornographers to increase visibility for their content in search engines. While the designations may seem confusing at first, as they could mean anything from „X and XXXX” all the way up to 'Zero and Zero”.
X-rated movies
X-rated movies are adult films that may not be appropriate for children due to violent or sexual content that could be distressing to young audiences. They are typically classified as either X or NC-17 in some countries.
Established in 1968, the X rating was intended as an adult-only classification that distinguished between G and R ratings, specifically to highlight adult themes, nudity, sexual suggestive scenes or violence rather than simply pornographic material.
But as X became associated with hard-core porn, it caused numerous difficulties for theaters to book these films, while many newspapers refused to advertise them.
Due to this misperception, X-rated films became less and less popular among mainstream audiences and studios quickly stopped producing them altogether. Many viewers saw these as cheap sex flicks with no artistic value whatsoever.
In 1990, the MPAA created the NC-17 rating as a replacement to the X rating. While successful at becoming the standard for movies with sexual and violence-oriented content, its negative aspects still manifested themselves within it.
Over time, the X rating became an insulting signifier of pornography and enabled pornographers to exploit this system and brand their films with it.
Unfortunately, this rendered the X rating nearly useless for its original purpose of delineating adult content. As a result, NC-17 classification was created and is now more commonly seen than before; although these ratings can sometimes be difficult to locate.
