This film also has a more sophisticated thematic agenda than most slashers. It contemplates concepts like sex and violence, liberation and repression, youth and old age; visually stimulating yet shocking imagery makes this an outstanding slasher film of our era. A contender for one of the top twenty-first century slashers.

Ti West’s directorial debut, X, stands out as an innovative slasher of this generation. Combining elements from Tobe Hooper’s X and Strangers: Prey at Night with modern aesthetics without resorting to stylistic homage or self-awareness for full immersion, West successfully avoids over-ironizing his characters as in The House of the Devil (2009) or The Innkeepers (2012) – two films in which West also found success as director.
West’s treatment of nudity in X is nuanced rather than exploitative. While some scenes depict male nudity as shocking and repugnant, other scenes portray female nudity as sensuous or even desirable in certain instances – creating a unique cautionary tale about sexual repression among young women today.
